Preston - a centre of excellence for research and development

Sika Research and Development Centre, Preston

by Cheryl Douglas, Head of Marketing, Sika UK

With 100 years experience in supplying products for the building sector, Sika have subsidiaries in 89 countries around the world, over 16,000 employees and generate annual sales in excess of £3 billion.

Sika UK is a speciality chemicals company with a leading position in the development and production of systems and products for the repair, protection, construction and sealing of your building.

The firm’s success and reputation is based on a long-lasting tradition of innovation, with over 800 employees dedicated to research and development.

It is for this reason that Sika acquired the Iotech Group in 2009, the parent company of Liquid Plastics on Miller Street, Preston in a multi-million pound deal.

The name Liquid Plastics has since remained and a new research and development centre was opened by the Duke of Kent in November 2014.

Built by Preston construction firm Conlon, the £2.5 million building is on the site of a former 100-year-old warehouse.

What does Sika offer Preston?

Sika has continued to invest in the Lancashire area to support the development of technologically advanced liquid roofing membranes and new developments in product technologies.

From the Preston site, where 179 people are employed, the company exports these products all over the world.

The aim was to develop a Centre of Excellence in liquid roofing and Sika chose Preston for that research and development centre in the UK.

Why? The business recognised the expertise and skills set in Preston. We are excited to continue developing and nurturing that talent to the benefit of all Sika subsidiaries and customers across the globe.

Sika cannot guarantee what the future holds for the construction industry but one thing is certain, Lancashire has made a fantastic contribution to the UK subsidiary and we look forward to making headways in product innovation.
