About Markets Quarter
The vision for the Markets Quarter development is to revitalise Preston Markets, deliver a ‘game-changing’ cinema and restaurant complex and bring both the stunning listed former Post Office and Amounderness House back into regular use.
The Markets are a key part of the city’s culture and heritage and are very important to Preston. This ambitious project is at the heart of city centre re-generation with Preston City Council committed to significant investment to provide a new, successful market.
Planning applications for the revitalised markets and the new cinema complex will be submitted shortly.
The plans for the Market Hall show a new glass and timber-clad pavilion-style building located under part of the larger listed Victorian market canopy with the remainder of the canopy continuing to operate as an outdoor market during the day and flexible event and performance space in the evening.
Cinema and Leisure Scheme
Muse Developments have put forward the plans for the cinema complex which comprise a state-of-the-art 11-screen cinema including a large format experience screen, run by cinema operators, The Light, 7 family restaurants and a replacement multi-storey car park.
Phase 1 - Completed May 2016 - Restoration on the Fish Market canopy comprising refurbishment of the metalwork, redecoration and re-lighting.
Phase 2 - Completed December 2016 - Restoration of the 1875 Market Canopy to the same standard as the Fish Market Canopy.
Phase 3 - On site - Building the new indoor market hall under the restored 1875 Market Canopy.
Phase 4 - Demolition of current market hall and car park.
Phase 5 - Construction of the landmark cinema, restaurant and car park complex on the site of the demolished indoor market hall.
What will happen to the current market throughout this period of change?
Preston Markets will continue to trade throughout the redevelopment process. The current market hall will not close until the new Indoor Market is built and open. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption to the Outdoor Market and Car Boot and Flea Market during this time.
