Corporation Street Junction, Preston, Lancashire

The Corporation Street area of the city centre covers the key zone between Preston's mainline railway station and the University of Central Lancashire's campus. It is defined by two main streets, Corporation Street itself and the historic Friargate which link both Preston's city centre and university, bisected by Ringway.

The area has a mixed range of uses including retail on Friargate, offices, educational, commercial and, increasingly, student accommodation.

Public realm improvements in the area started with the reconfiguration of the junctions at both Corporation Street and Friargate with Ringway, making them much more pedestrian friendly. Corporation Street between Ringway and Preston railway station has also recently been significantly upgraded. Further public realm improvements will follow in due course.

Given its location between the hugely successful university and Preston railway station, Corporation Street is the ideal place for new knowledge based industries that would benefit from this co-location. There are numerous opportunities for the re-use and redevelopment of under used sites and buildings and proposals for high quality, mixed use development will be actively supported.

City Living

The UCLan Campus Masterplan sets out a 10 year vision for the area focusing on opening up the campus with a new square and social space, bringing Preston city centre closer to UCLan through landscaping and connections via Friargate and Corporation Street - key links to the city centre.

Building upon the existing student village there is scope for higher quality student accommodation supported by a vibrant food and drink offer. This will attract further students, post graduates and international students whilst also supporting the retention of graduates and young professionals to commence their working career in Preston. The £18m Friargate Student Accommodation scheme comprising 244 fully furnished ensuite bedrooms has established a new benchmark in the area.
