Sports, Gyms and Healthclubs
Preston has many proud links with sporting heritage, not least with its claim to be the birthplace of football as we know it today. There is so much to savour, from Preston North End’s enduring legacy to the city that brought us Sir Tom Finney, to more recently producing world class cricketer Andrew Flintoff and athletics icons like Helen Clitheroe.
However, the Guild City’s sporting success is certainly not all about the past. Today, you can find a whole host of leisure venues and clubs brimming with fitness and sports activities for you to enjoy:
UCLan Sports Arena
You only have to look at the story behind the UCLan Sports Arena, this state-of-the-art facility illustrating the University of Central Lancashire’s commitment to sports development, playing a significant role in improving local sports provision, not just for students but also for the wider Preston public.
This premier multi-sports provides:
- rugby league and union
- other sports
It is also a designated stop on the Guild Wheel cycleway and offers bikes for hire for those looking to explore the great outdoors.
There are a wide variety of sports clubs in the city and surrounding area catering for many sports, such as athletics, cricket, hockey, rugby and running, as well as a selection of sports pitches for hire.
Gyms and Health Clubs
Preston Guild City has leisure centres managed by Preston City Council with a range of great facilities at both Fulwood Leisure Centre and West View Leisure Centre. Each venue offers swimming pools, a newly-refurbished and fully-equipped gym, a sports hall, sauna, badminton and squash courts, with value for money membership deals available. West View Climbing and Leisure Centre also offers a popular climbing wall facility.
There is also a wide selection of private health clubs and gyms, located across the city.
