Preston Marriott: the hotel on the northern approach at Broughton

North of the city on the A6, and the entry most often searched with the word spa attached.

Preston Marriott is a hotel at Broughton, on the northern approach to Preston along the A6. It is a corridor hotel, and it is searched most often with spa attached to the query.

Broughton sits where the A6 leaves the built-up edge of Preston towards Garstang and the Fylde, which puts the hotel within reach of both the city and the country to the north — The Flower Bowl and Barton Grange are on the same corridor.

A car is assumed. The city centre is a short drive but not a walk.

The northern approach

Broughton is a village on the A6 with the city eight minutes to the south, so a stay here assumes a car and treats Preston as somewhere you drive into for the evening. The road frame is on the places to stay sheet.

Broughton sits on the A6 north of the city, at the point where Preston's built edge gives out and the country between here and Garstang begins. It carried the main north road traffic for centuries and still carries a good deal of it, which is why hotel provision collected here, not in the centre. The Marriott belongs to that northern approach group along with Barton Grange further up the same road.

What is within reach

Northwards the A6 leads towards Garstang and, on the minor roads east of it, towards Beacon Fell and the southern edge of Bowland. Southwards it runs into the city past the university campus. That is a useful combination for a stay that is partly city and partly country, and it is the argument for the northern corridor over a central hotel.

The city centre is a drive of a few miles. The A6 is direct but slow at the ends of the working day, when the university traffic and the city traffic use the same road.

What else is north of the centre

The northern approach carries most of the district's roadside provision because it carried the main road to Lancaster and Scotland for centuries before the motorway took the through traffic. The older buildings along the A6 through Broughton and Barton are the evidence, and the Flower Bowl and Barton Grange are the modern version of the same logic.

Turning east off the A6 the lanes climb quickly towards Beacon Fell and the southern edge of Bowland, which is the nearest genuinely upland country to the city.
