Shaw Hill: the golf club and hotel between Preston and Chorley

One of two golf-and-hotel entries in this directory, and the southern one.

Shaw Hill is a golf club with hotel provision between Preston and Chorley, south of the city. It is one of two golf-and-hotel entries in this directory, the other being Garstang to the north.

The combination is a common one in the north west: a parkland course on a country estate, with the house converted to hotel use and the grounds laid out for golf. It suits a stay built around the course, with Preston as an afterthought.

The city centre is a drive away. For accommodation within walking distance of the sights, the two central budget entries are the relevant ones.

Towards Chorley

The two golf entries sit on country lanes at either end of the district, and this southern one is built around the course; Preston is a separate errand from it. The road frame is on the places to stay sheet.

Shaw Hill sits south east of Preston on the way to Chorley, in the belt of country between the two towns where the land begins to rise towards the West Pennine Moors. It is the southern counterpart to Garstang in the north: a golf course with accommodation attached, on a country site well off the main roads.

The landscape on this side

The south east is the least-known approach to Preston and the most obviously scenic after the north. The moors edge is close, the lanes are quiet, and the reservoirs and wooded valleys between here and Chorley are a different landscape from the Ribble corridor that dominates the city's own outdoor sheets. Anybody combining golf with walking is better placed here than anywhere else in this category.

Preston city centre is a drive of about eight miles, most of it on A roads, with no motorway on the route. A car is assumed.

What else is south east of the centre

The south east is where Lancashire starts to become upland. The West Pennine edge is close, the lanes are quiet, and the reservoirs and wooded cloughs between here and Chorley are walkable country of a kind Preston itself does not have. Anybody combining golf with walking is better placed here than anywhere else in the places to stay category.

Towards the city the route runs down through Leyland, where the Hallmark occupies a similar between-two-towns position on the motorway corridor.
