Thus reads the inscription on the outside of the stunning grade I listed Harris Museum & Art Gallery, a phrase that means as much today as it did when the building first opened.

Since 1893, Preston Harris Museum & Art Gallery has been a popular place to visit in Lancashire and has enriched the lives of both its visitors and the local community. Hosting regular events, new exhibitions and weekly activities for both kids and adults, It offers a great day out for all the family.

Exploring the Harris

Step inside and you will find a treasure trove of fantastic art and fascinating objects to discover; with remarkable collections of fine art, fashion, textiles, ceramics, glass and history to explore. Boasting the largest gallery space in Lancashire, you can easily whittle away a few blissful hours browsing through the fascinating displays of art and local history.

Don’t forget to call into the café and enjoy the inspirational setting and views up to the Egyptian balcony... It will leave you in awe.

Artful heights

Head up the dramatic staircase to explore two floors of art; ranging from contemporary art to fine examples of 19th and 20th century paintings, sculptures, photography and more. The collection includes works by Stanley Spencer, George Romney, Walter Sickert, LS Lowry and the Preston-based Devis family.

The new and frequently changing exhibitions ensure there is never a dull moment, featuring work by up-and-coming talent as well as locally, nationally and internationally renowned artists.

Discover Preston through the ages

Don’t miss the Discover Preston gallery which opened in 2012, devoted to celebrating what makes Preston special. From the 13,500 year-old Poulton Elk to the Preston Guild (the last remaining Guild celebration in the UK). Take a trip through Preston’s past and explore the stories, people and events which shaped our city.

The galleries are open Tuesday - Saturday 10am, Monday and Sunday 11am.

  • Tuesday: 9am-5pm
  • Wednesday: 9am-8pm
  • Thursday: 9am-5pm
  • Friday: 9am-5pm
  • Saturday: 9am-5pm
  • Sunday: 9am-4pm

Café and shop
