The Continental: the riverside live music venue in Preston

The best-known independent live room in the city, and the only one by the river.

The Continental is a pub and live music venue by the River Ribble in Preston, near the western end of the park corridor. It is the best-known independent live room in the city and the entry most searched in this category.

Its position is part of what distinguishes it. Preston's live music happens in pubs and independent rooms, the city having no purpose-built equivalent, and this is the only room of note down on the river — a short walk from the bottom of Avenham and Miller Parks and on the Guild Wheel's river section.

The Continental Preston is the name it trades under, and the riverside position is what the name is attached to for anybody who has been.

The riverside position

Preston has no entertainment quarter, so its performance venues sit individually wherever a suitable building was available, and this one sits down by the river, a good walk from the commercial centre. That position is worth something specific: it puts the venue on the walk between the city centre and Avenham and Miller Parks, in the part of Preston where the ground drops towards the Ribble.

A riverside site also means the surroundings are parkland and water, with no shopfronts at all, which changes what an evening there is like. It is a fifteen-minute walk from the middle of the city, downhill on the way there.

The walk it sits on

South of the commercial centre the ground falls through Winckley Square into Avenham and Miller Parks and down to the river. A riverside venue is at the bottom of that fall, which makes the approach to it a walk through Victorian designed landscape, and never through streets — downhill going, uphill coming back.

The Ribble path runs east and west from that point, and the southern arc of the Guild Wheel passes along the river here, so the position connects to the outdoor half of the city as directly as to the cultural one.
